A Teen Bedroom Upgrade

A client’s 13-year old son had a corner attic bedroom that had been minimally refurbished when the family purchased and renovated the home. Because of the room's long, narrow shape, and the odd ceiling and wall angles, there was only room for a twin bed — and even that felt like an awkward placement because of the shallow nook that wasn’t quite deep enough to fully contain it. In addition, he had no room for a desk, which was becoming a bigger necessity as he entered the teen years. He wanted a room that both functioned well and looked appropriate for middle and high school.

With the goal of visually minimizing angles, as well as maximizing the nook where the bed was placed (the only good placement for a bed), we designed a custom platform that allowed for a solid façade to define both the sleeping/lounging space and the bookshelves behind it. This not only grounded the bed placement, but the platform style had the additional benefit of allowing more headspace for a growing teen. Drawers were added to the platform to allow for more clothing storage, and colorful led ground effects were added at the special design request of a 13-year old client ; )

The previous inset closet was removed, and a custom desk/closet combo was created, maximizing a space that was previously underutilized. Custom shelving, wall pegs, and well-placed lighting and outlets created a space that uses every available inch of the small room while minimizing visual clutter. A dramatic two-toned wall color scheme created a solid horizon line, and the ceiling and upper/opposing walls were painted the same pale neutral blue to give the impression of more vertical space.
