Primary Bedroom Refresh

After working together through several rooms in her home, a Lexington client was ready to tackle the primary bedroom. Like other spaces we’d completed, the goal was to reuse a few of the heirloom-quality pieces she already owned, and build a peaceful, pulled-together retreat.

The Design Plan started with what was staying: a vintage, high-quality, nearly wall-to-wall wool rug, and a Kipp Stewart Drexel Declaration lowboy dresser. The client hoped to keep the king-sized headboard, so we made that a goal to stretch their budget for other higher-priced items. Other furniture items had been pieced together over years, and the mismatch created a haphazard and chaotic feeling.

After searching local second-hand markets for other vintage Kipp Stewart pieces, a local reseller (found on Instagram) came through with a highboy and pair of nightstands in great condition. We updated the walls & trim with soft white paint, and added subtle texture behind the bed with flax-colored grass cloth.

Wall-mounted plug-in sconces offer ambient evening light and keep valuable nightstand space open for books and coffee cups without the expense of an electrician. A large mirror over the dresser acts as a natural room-expander and light-reflector. A woven-leather bench, sourced from Marketplace, adds warmth and natural texture and extends the length of the bed in a large room.

New bed textiles balance the red in the wool rug, and neutral roman shades with a subtle stripe add a tailored finish without weighing down the walls. A Cezanne-inspired vintage oil painting, sourced from a local estate sale, works well with their previously-owned pieces to give life to the neutral walls.
