An Attic Guest Room Makeover

Kelly’s attic guest room functioned well; but it wasn’t very welcoming or pulled-together. She hoped to keep what was there: twin beds, and custom (but slightly-dated) bedding — but make a few changes and bring in some additions to make the space cheerier and more comfortable for guests. The first things to go were the rug (seen only in first pic) and window valances, which gave the space too formal a feeling.

The first purchase, a neutral flatweave rug, lightened the space immediately. Inexpensive fabric headboards, adjusted to a height that allowed fitting under the low ceiling, were edged with wide velvet ribbon to give a custom look. Plug-in wall sconces allowed for bedside light where table lamps would be too tall. Bright, geometric curtain panels from Wayfair were hemmed for a tailored look, and an extra panel was purchased to make a simple box valance for a second window. A velvet chair and pharmacy lamp from Target made a reading corner of an awkwardly-angled nook, and a new bookshelf lined with faux grasspaper gave definition to a once-empty wall. New wall art and throw pillows brought in pops of teal and coral in the otherwise neutral-heavy room.
